Like many other techniques originating in the Roman world, <em>Opus sectile<\/em>\u00a0floors were first used locally in Herod\u2019s grandiose buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6720 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/tmsifting.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/fig17-low-res-1-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tmsifting.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/fig17-low-res-1-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tmsifting.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/fig17-low-res-1-450x364.jpg 450w, https:\/\/tmsifting.org\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/fig17-low-res-1.jpg 495w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 279px) 100vw, 279px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">The tiles were meticulously cut in geometric shapes, and precisely fitted into a colorful geometric pattern based on the Roman foot (29.6 cm).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While some were local, many of the multi-colored tiles were imported from a variety of locales, including Asia Minor, Greece, Tunisia and Egypt.
